Child Therapy |
Children are among the most vulnerable in our society. They come into the world able to absorb not only the ABC's but also the emotional content of the space they inhabit. Aside from physical nourishment, their primary aim is to find a secure attachment. In addition to good food and a clean diaper, they crave the safety that comes with a loving, supportive and grounded household.
Sometimes children are unable to find the kind of attachment they need. This can come as a result of illness on the part of the child or parent. It can come because the family has been disrupted by employment demands and other factors that diminish quality time with a growing child. When this happens children find life quite difficult and can make life for those around them quite difficult. Child therapy is a proven way to address these issues. |
What happens in Child Therapy |
What happens in Child Therapy depends a great deal on the age of the child. Therapy with a 5 year old is quite different from therapy with a 16 year old. Play is the language of very young children. For this reason, play therapy is the preferred intervention with younger children. It has been shown to be highly effective by allowing young children to express their emotions through various play activities specifically designed to help them communicate their experience. The older the child, the more likely traditional talk therapy will be employed.
